Only One Thing is Needed | Lessons from Mary and Martha

“Only one thing is needed.”

These are the words Jesus told Martha after she had expressed her frustrations to Him.

Martha had opened her home to Jesus and his disciples as they arrived in the village of Bethany.

She was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made.

It sounds to me like Martha was a list person.

There was probably a long checklist of things that needed accomplished yet, and she was in over her head. She felt like her sister Mary had left her to do all the work herself.

While Martha was worried and upset, Mary was sitting at the feet of Jesus, just listening.

Martha was so lost in the details that she lost sight of what was greater.

We can become so busy serving Jesus that we forget to simply just be in His presence.

I am probably the most guilty person of this.

Being still is something that’s often hard for me. It feels foreign and it’s rare to not find me in the middle of some project or activity to keep me busy.

Serving God is so important, but so is spending time with Him and spending time in His Word.

A well cannot give water to others if it has become dry itself.

What’s on your list today? We’re all dealing with different situations, distractions and worries. Will you prioritize just sitting at the feet of Jesus?
